The story behind the Artwork

A Story About Nature, Recovery and Hope

Echoes of the North began with a fascination for the threatened animals of Scandinavia.

Each artwork in the series explores a species whose future is affected by the changing relationship between nature and the world we have created around it.

And then came the golden eagle.

The golden eagle is making a return.

That made Hope Takes Flight the natural final artwork of the series.

After creating works centred around animals facing serious threats, I wanted the final image to carry something different.

Hope.

The golden eagle appears in the foreground, strong and watchful, with the Scandinavian landscape behind it.

And in that landscape, the wind turbines stand as a reminder of the complicated relationship between modern life and the natural world. They can represent one of the pressures that wildlife has had to adapt to — but they also represent our attempt to find new ways of living and producing energy.

The story is therefore not about blaming one thing or another.

It is about remembering that we are all part of the same nature.

Birds are part of it.
Insects are part of it.
Animals are part of it.
People are part of it.
The climate, forests, oceans and landscapes are part of it.

Everything is connected.

Nature has its own ways of finding balance, but we also have the ability to contribute to its survival and recovery.

And perhaps that is what makes the return of the golden eagle so fascinating.

It shows that recovery is possible.

Hope Takes Flight is therefore not a dramatic ending to Echoes of the North.

It is a hopeful one.

The eagle is still here.

It is still flying.

And perhaps that is the most important message of the entire series:

If we choose to care for the nature we are part of, there is still hope for what comes next.
