Every line in Silent Watch is drawn entirely by hand using black fineliner, with selected areas carefully enhanced with diluted acrylic paint. The artwork portrays a little owl — a small bird with a remarkable cultural history and an increasingly uncertain future in Denmark.

Known as a symbol of wisdom and insight through its association with Athena in ancient Greek culture, the little owl becomes a particularly meaningful subject here: a watchful and intelligent bird whose survival in the Danish landscape now depends heavily on the conditions we create around it.

The story behind the Artwork

A Story About Wisdom, Nature and Responsibility

Silent Watch began with a fascination for the little owl — Athene noctua — a bird that carries an almost timeless symbolism. In ancient Greek culture, the owl was the sacred bird of Athena and became associated with wisdom, prudence and insight. There is something particularly fitting about that symbolism when looking at the little owl today.

Because this wise and watchful bird is facing a very different kind of challenge.

The little owl is one of Denmark’s most threatened owl species and is now critically endangered here. Its Danish population has become extremely small, and its future remains uncertain. One of the central problems is something very simple:

food.

The little owl depends on a rich and varied agricultural landscape where it can find the small animals it needs — including insects, earthworms and rodents. But as the landscape changes, so does the availability of food.Over time, the Danish agricultural landscape has become more intensive and less varied in many places. Small habitats, field boundaries and other areas rich in life have disappeared or changed, making it increasingly difficult for the little owl to find enough food, particularly during the breeding season. 

This is where the story becomes bigger than the bird itself. Humans need space. Agriculture needs space. Wildlife needs space too.

We are not separate from nature. We are part of the same system, and the choices we make can affect the lives of species that may never be seen by most of us.

Silent Watch is therefore not about blaming people or pointing to one single cause.

It is about awareness.

About remembering to look beyond our own immediate needs and consider what happens around us when we change the landscape. The little owl becomes a symbol of that connection. A small, intelligent bird watching quietly from the landscape — dependent on a world that we humans have helped shape. And perhaps that is what makes the species so fascinating.

The owl has traditionally represented wisdom and the ability to see what others might overlook. Here, that symbolism becomes almost a question:

Are we wise enough to notice what is disappearing around us?

The answer does not have to be about giving nature back to a world without people.

There must be room for us too. There must be room for farming, communities, homes and human life. But there must also be room for the insects, plants, birds and animals that make the landscape a living place.

There has to be room for all of us.

And perhaps this is what Silent Watch ultimately asks us to remember:

Everything is connected.

When we change one part of nature, something else may feel the consequences. But the opposite is also true. When we choose to create space for life, we can help nature recover.

The little owl is still here.

Still watching.

And perhaps its quiet presence is a reminder that wisdom is not only about knowing more.

Sometimes it is about seeing what is in front of us — and choosing to care.
